内容紹介
本作は、恋人ラッスの兄フェルトンから奇妙な電話をもらったネッドが、ラッスとともに、フェルトンが「人工遺伝」の研究をしている屋敷へ向かうところから始まる。屋敷に到着した二人は、人間の服を着ていて、フェルトンと同じ身体的な特徴のある猿が死んでいるのを発見。フェルトンの共同研究者だったロビン博士は、ネッドとラッスに、フェルトンの資金援助で生物を遺伝的に変化させる装置を開発したものの、自分の体で装置の実験をしたフェルトンは退化して猿になり、絶望して自殺したと語る。物語は、本当に死んでいた猿はフェルトンなのかを軸に進んでいく。（編者解説より）
