Desde que H. Rider Haggard lo pusiera de moda a finales del Siglo XIX, el subgénero de razas perdidas, mundos preservados y civilizaciones olvidadas fue un valor seguro durante las primeras décadas del Siglo XX. Desde James Hilton a Rex Stout, pasando por Edgar Rice Burroughs o Abraham Merritt, una gran parte de los autores populares de la época tocaron estos temas en uno u otro momento. Y en las páginas de la Revista Única, Weird Tales, no fueron pocos los escritores que recurrieron a esta temática, tan exótica como fascinante. Edmond Hamilton fue uno de ellos. Comenzando con una novela por entregas, “La princesa del fuego”, Hamilton publicó una generosa cantidad de narraciones de esta índole, que aparecen recopiladas en el presente volumen. En estas aventuras, intrépidos arqueólogos, espías, aviadores y aventureros de toda índole, visitan toda suerte de mundos preservados, en ocasiones mediante viajes al pasado, o sencillamente visitando valles recónditos, sin cartografiar, cuando no viajando directamente a otra dimensión paralela. Los antiguos mayas, el mundo de los dioses celtas, la mítica Cartago, el reposo subacuático de los últimos demonios babilonios, el mismísimo Valhalla de los mitos nórdicos… todo eso y mucho más va a poder visitar el lector en este volumen, tan fascinante como divertido.

Scomparso nel febbraio di quest’anno [1977], Edmond Hamilton è giustamente considerato uno dei nomi più popolali della fantascienza americana e un autore che ha collaborato attivamente alla creazione dei modelli più classici di space opera, ma qui vogliamo ricordarlo con due esempi piuttosto particolari della sua produzione che ha coperto quasi mezzo secolo; abbiamo scelto infatti due lunghi racconti di heroic fantasy ancora inediti, per osservare Hamilton in un contesto insolito. II punto di avvio quasi comune – due individui che per vie diverse si trovano ad indossare i panni di due antiche divinità, il nordico Tyr dalla Spada e il maya Kukulcan – segue in entrambi i casi un’evoluzione parallela che trasporta le due storie sulla linea di confine fra fantasy e fantascienza propriamente detta, ottenendo il risultato di una narrazione singolare e avvincente.
Per i fans di Robert Bloch e presente anche un inedito orrorifico (Return the Sabbath), dove il magistrale autore di Psyco spiega come possano andare le cose sul set di un film del terrore… quando il primo attore è troppo pratico del mestiere, mentre per quanto riguarda la parte critica questo volume riserva una sorpresa che speriamo gradita.
